This is a special interview by LCO columnist Julián Esteban Torres López who speaks to Teo Calavera, the lead singer and director of Medellin-based band Calavera y la Popular Independiente. Photo credits go to El Callejón Reggaer bar.

JETL: Little Colombia Observationist reaches an international audience. For those unfamiliar with Calavera y la Popular Independiente, can you give a brief introduction to your band? How long have you been together? How did you meet?
Little Colombia Observationist llega a una audiencia internacional. Para aquellos que no están familiarizados con Calavera y La Popular Independiente ¿nos puede dar una pequeña introducción a su banda? ¿Cuánto tiempo han estado juntos? ¿Cómo se conocieron?
CPI: La Popular Independiente is like a trip on a chiva that I arranged in 2010. I called some friends, others arrived casually or by fate and we all went for a ride. They were all musicians in the city of Medellin that we knew from playing in local bands. Now we are the mafia of good vibes, a group of friends who do happy folk music with the sole purpose of giving color to life and enjoying it.
La Popular Independiente es como un viaje en chiva que yo arranqué en el 2010, llamé unos amigos, otros llegaron por casualidad o destino y  todos se fueron montando en el cuento, todos músicos de la ciudad de Medellín, nos conocíamos entre todos tocando en bandas locales. Ahora somos la mafia de la buena vibra, un grupo de amigos que hacemos música folclórica y alegre, con el único propósito de darle color a la vida y disfrutarla.

JETL: What is the essence of la Calavera y La Popular Independiente?
¿Cuál es la esencia de la Calavera y La Popular Independiente?
CPI: Speaking of the essence is like talking about food, and we call it ”sazón.” For us paisas, the basis of this soup is the guasca music of Antioquia. From there we take everything -- cumbia, lane, rock, reggae, bachata, reggaeton -- and mix it up like a soup of many ingredients so you can enjoy it.
Hablar de esencia es como hablar de comida, y nosotros le llamamos “sazón”. Como somos paisas la base de esta sopa es la música guasca de Antioquia, de ahí en adelante le echamos de todo, cumbia, carrilera, rock, reggae, bachata, reggaetón, somos como un sopa de muchos ingredientes y todo el que la prueba le queda gustando.

JETL: What inspires you to make music? Where does your music come from?
¿Qué te inspira para hacer música? ¿De dónde viene tu música?
CPI: It comes from our daily lives, what we hear in the city we live in -- buses, bars, radios in the shops, what we hear in our own music players, all the music we have access to in the media -- and then we channel the creativity, the joy, the danceable rhythms and the fun. 
De nuestra cotidianidad, lo que oímos en la ciudad que vivimos, en los buses, las cantinas, los radios en la tiendas, lo que oímos en nuestros reproductores, toda la música a la que tenemos acceso en los medios, de ahí ya canalizamos la creatividad a algo alegre, bailable y divertido.

JETL: The first emotion I feel when I hear your music is not with the mind but with the heart.What I feel is pure emotion. I’m happy. What do you consider necessary to make your music a success while playing on stage in front of an audience?
La primera experiencia que siento cuando escucho tu música no es con la mente pero con el corazón. Lo que siento es pura emoción. Me siento contento. ¿Que considera que sea necesario para que tu música sea un éxito mientras que estén tocando en el escenario en frente de una audiencia?
CPI: That’s exactly what we want to convey -- joy -- and while this group of friends will always exist through music, we’ve always had concerts where the audience responds very well, sings and dances or  finishes singing a chorus (Sopetrán, tran, tran).
Eso es exactamente lo que queremos transmitir, alegría, y mientras haya un grupo de amigos siempre existirá la música, realmente en los conciertos que hemos tenido siempre el público responde muy bien, canta y baila, hasta terminan cantando algún coro (sopetran, tran, tran).

JETL: There is something in your music that is very unique in that each member of the band has a very different sound, but they complement and create something that can actually be enjoyed by anyone. You really do not have to be Colombian or speak the language to enjoy your music. However, despite the band members having their own identities, with the sound the band also presents  something that is very familiar. Some of the music makes me feel at home in my home. How does living in Colombia influence your musical creativity? How does being “Colombian” and “being Paisa” have an impact on your artistic work?
Hay algo en su música que es muy única en la que cada miembro de la banda tiene un sonido muy distinto y diferente, pero todos se complementan y crean algo que realmente puede ser disfrutado por cualquier persona. Realmente uno no tiene que ser colombianos o hablar el idioma para disfrutar tu música. Sin embargo, a pesar de que los miembros de la banda tienen sus propias identidades, con el sonido que nos presentan como banda también hay algo que es muy familiar. Algo de su música me hace sentir como en casa, en mi hogar. ¿Cómo influye su creatividad musical vivir en Colombia? ¿De qué manera “ser colombiano” y “ser paisa” tienen un impacto en su obra artística?
CPI: It is Popular Independiente and all are welcome to listen and dance in our house, to our folklore. Being Colombian means we have parties and that makes us happy. We rescue our roots and mix them with something new. We’re simply very conscious of our Latino identity.
Eso es popular independiente y todos son bienvenidos a escuchar y bailar en nuestra casa, nuestro folklor, ser colombianos nos hace rumberos y alegres, nosotros rescatamos nuestras raíces y mezclamos para hacer algo nuevo, simplemente somos muy conscientes de nuestra identidad latina.

JETL: Tell us about some places in Medellin where you go to feel inspired. Where are your favorite places to play your music in Medellin, and why?
Cuéntanos acerca unos lugares en Medellín donde van a sentirse inspirados. ¿Cuáles son sus sitios favoritos para tocar tu música en Medellín y por qué?
CPI: Any corner can become a party if there’s a drum or a guitar. There are song ideas that have come mounted on a bus or found chatting with friends at a bar. We rehearse in a house in the area of castropol de poblado where we have a very nice meeting two times per week, where we feel comfortable because we have all the tools and a good space. Being in the studio is also a good experience and we are treated to the sound and good feedback from the producer.
Cualquier esquina puede convertirse en una rumba si hay un tambor o una guitarra, hay ideas de canciones que han surgido montado en bus o conversando con amigos en un bar. Ensayamos en una casa en el sector de castropol del poblado donde hacemos una reunión muy agradable 2 veces por semana, allí nos sentimos cómodos porque tenemos todos los instrumentos y un buen espacio, estar en el estudio también es una buena experiencia ya que allí depuramos el sonido y se hace una buena retroalimentación con el productor.

JETL: Who are your favorite Colombian musicians? Can you recommend other new and emerging bands that we should follow?
¿Quiénes son tus músicos colombianos favoritos? ¿Nos pueden recomendar otras bandas nuevas y emergentes que debemos seguir?
CPI: There are many musicians who inspire us such as a Bomba Estéreo, Systema Solar and el Frente Cumbiero. Classics like Fruko y Sus Tesos, the combination de Las Estrellas and Octavio Mesa, obviously Juanes is a great example of pushing outside of the country and the mixture of rock and Latin music. Another of the musicians we admire as the father of Luis Miguel (percussion), Rubén Jaramillo who has given us much of his knowledge.
Hay muchos músicos que nos inspiran, actuales como bomba estéreo, Systema Solar y el frente cumbiero, clásicos como fruko y sus tesos, el combo de las estrellas y Octavio Mesa, obviamente Juanes es un gran ejemplo del empuje paisa y la mezcla del rock con la música latina. Otro de los Músicos que admiramos como es el papá de Luis Miguel (percusionista), el maestro Rubén Jaramillo quien nos ha brindado mucho conocimiento.

JETL: How far has your music come and where do you see it going?
¿De dónde viene tu música y a dónde quiere que vaya?
CPI: The music comes from our hearts and hands and a voice. To be heard is to profit. I hope these sounds go far, all the countries of Latin America, Europe, the United States and other continents -- to people who do not speak our language but in whom we can infect some of our musical taste. The journey is just beginning.
La música sale de nuestros corazones, se transmite con las manos y la voz, a cualquier oído que llegue es ganancia, ojala estos sonidos lleguen lejos, a todos los países de Latinoamérica, Europa, los estado unidos y el resto de los continentes, a quienes no hablan nuestro idioma para contagiarles algo de nuestro sabor musical, el viaje apenas comienza.
